William A. Perry was the third child born to Thomas Perry (1803-1872) and Mary Dillard (~1797-1865).

William was born about 1828 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He was married first on 8 Feb 1849 to Elizabeth Kilcrease (~1830-1858). The following children were born to this union: Mary A. Perry and John Oliver Perry.

William was married second in 1860 to Mary S. Chandler (1833-1916). The following children were born to this union: Nancy Ann Perry, Marian Angeline Perry, and Sintha Caroline Perry.

William A. Perry and his younger brother James Monroe Perry both served (mustered in 7 May 1862) as Privates (Pvt) in Company I (Gwinnett County), 55th Regiment, Georgia (Volunteer) Infantry, Army of Tennessee, Confederate States Army (CSA).

More than 540 Georgia men (55 Ga Inf Reg officers and enlisted) were captured at the bloodless Battle of Cumberland Gap (7-9 September 1863), in which Brig. Gen. John W. Frazer surrendered his 2,300-man 5th Brigade garrison (10 Sep 1863). The brothers were transferred to Camp Douglas (prisoner of war camp), Chicago, IL, where they both died of smallpox. William died on 5 Jun 1864 and his brother James died on 19 Apr 1864.

Camp Douglas was the largest Union Army POW camp for detaining Confederate military personnel. Roughly 4,500 Confederate soldiers died at Camp Douglas of overcrowding, poor sanitation and diseases such as dysentery, smallpox, typhoid fever and tuberculosis.
