Born December 23, 1934, in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Earle James and Mamie Hester Brown May. She came to Lakeland in 1971 from Jacksonville, Florida. A devoted Christian, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Monroe, Sr.; son, Steven Keith Monroe; grandsons, Michael Wayne and Mark Wesley Monroe; brother, Earle J. May, Jr.; sisters, Edith Hester May and Nannie May Gentry.
Survivors include her sons; James Monroe, Jr. and his wife Glynette of Lakeland; Tim Monroe and his wife Jan of Ooltewah, Tennessee; brothers, Marion R. May and Carl F. May of Greenville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Jenny and Katie Monroe of Ooltewah, Tennessee, and Keith and Kyle Monroe of Lakeland, Florida.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Januray 15, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at Lakeland Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
