John Henry Bowman, for many years a blacksmith at the Cornwall railroad round house, died very suddenly at 9:10 o'clock this morning, at his home at 1024 Church Street. He was at his work at the round house on Monday morning when he was suddenly stricken with apoplexy. He was hurried to his home in the Bethlehem steel company ambulance and every medical aid possible was secured, but he did not recover consciousness and died at the hour named this morning. Mr. Bowman passed his 59th birthday anniversary last month. He was born and raised in the city, and spent his entire life time here. He was originally employed on the Cornwall railroad with a section force, but thirty five years ago took a position in the round house as a blacksmith and continued there ever since. He was probably best known as a prominent and active member of the Washington Camp, No. 254, Patriotic Order Sons' of America, and in the local commandery of the Knights of Malta., in both of which organizations he was prominent for many years. He held many offices in both organizations and was elected as the delegate to the State Camp by the Sons of America regularly for twenty years or more. He was a man with a high sense of honor, and was esteemed by all who know him. He was identified with the membership of the First United Evangelical church. Besides his second wife, Eva, he leaves the following children by a previous marriage, Raymond, Reading; Carrie, wife of Herman Sonderman, of Rochester, N. Y.; Stella, Wife of George Wentling, of Annville; Eva, wife of Harry Urich, of Lebanon; John E., of Avon, and Allen, at home. Mrs. Luther Hughes, Mrs. Annie Hollinger, Mrs. Harrison Shuey, Mrs. Valentine Gerberich, of this city, and Mrs. Edw. Miller, of Detroit, Michigan, are sisters, and Elias and Oscar Bowman, the Lebanon coal merchants, and Grant Bowman, also of Lebanon, are brothers. Mr. Bowman was a staunch Republican, and served about twelve years as a member of the Lebanon school board, as the Sixth ward representative and he served a considerable part of that time as the president of the board.
