While living along the Mississippi River bottoms in Missouri, Marilla's only daughter, Sarah Adelaide, died in childbirth with a son that survived... my father. Marilla cared for this infant as her own while his father went to work in Illinois. When the boy was about 2 years old, Marilla took him with her to Colorado to homestead along with her own oldest son. When the boy was 8 years old, his father joined Marilla in Colorado. There they married. While it might appear odd for a man to marry his mother-in-law, it seems that it may have been best for the child. He grew up well and strong back in Illinois. He shared many loving stories of his grandmother/stepmother.
