Birth name, Fred Lee Ferguson; changed legally by US Army in WWII to Jack A. In some records he had gone by Jack; Dad said he had a relative named Fred Lee, and that was confusing.
Married Mary Louise Bryant of Maryville, Blount, TN 2 Jun 1947 in Georgia. Dad's family lived briefly in Texas where he was born; but soon returned to Monroe county, TN.
T4 US Army, WWII, Europe (Britain, Iceland, France, Germany); Dad was in charge of a radio group near Reykjavik, Iceland, where the Army was monitoring the port for German submarine activity.
After the war, Dad used the GI Bill to study at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and graduated with a BS-Mechanical Engineering. Forever after, he was a huge Vols football fan, wherever we lived. Our mother supported him, working at the telephone company in Maryville while he studied; he often said his diploma should also have her name engraved on it next to his.
He worked very happily and successfully as an engineer for aluminum companies the rest of his life, such as ALCOA, Kaiser Aluminum, AMAX Aluminum and Reynolds Metals. He was consulting in retirement at Reynolds Aluminum in Richmond when he passed away. Dad received several patents associated with his work.
Dad was my rock; he was a great provider, made me feel safe and loved -- and gave good advice late at night when some problem was keeping me awake. He was only 67 when he died; too young.
