Ben Raley, Old Time Pioneer, Dies Aged 102

Pendleton (Special) - Benjamin Raley, 102, Umatilla County pioneer and the son of a Umatilla County pioneer family, died Monday at Grants Pass where he was Josephine County's oldest citizen.

Raley was born in Taylor County, Mo., on July 20, 1852. Twelve years later, in 1864, his parents, Jonathan and Rachel B. Raley, and his brothers and sisters reached Pendleton. Raley and a brother, the late Col. James H. Raley were among volunteers fighting the Indians in the war of 1878.

Raley was married September 11, 1881 to Winne Belle Howell, a former Pendleton school teacher who survives him. She is 94. They lived on the family ranch for a number of years then moved to Eastern Washington. They moved to Gaston in 1928 and Grants Pass in 1950.

Raley is survived by his widow, four sons, Frank H. Raley, Grants Pass; William C. Raley, Paradise, Calif.; James L. Raley, Milton-Freewater and Harry, Auburn; a daughter, Winnie Humphries of Lebanon; a sister, Mrs. Laura Layman, Boise, the only living member of the original Raley family; and a newphew, Roy Raley of Pendleton.

NOTE: Benjamin's obituary incorrectly state his birth county as Taylor. He was born in Taney County.
