Mary Derbyshire was born in Iowa in 1884 and living in Canada when her husband filed a homestead claim where he also had a coal mine. She and son Howard came to join him and came into the states through the port of entry at Buffalo, NY in May of 1913. Another son, Herbert, was born to this union. After her husband died, she and the boys kept the mine going for several years until the boys were grown. She moved into Havre where she was a waitress and cook.
