Riley Edward Davis
The residents of Anthon and surrounding community deeply mourns the passing at midnight Sunday, February 4, 1934, of Riley Edward Davis, oldest son of Zephaniah Augustus and Mary Emmogene Davis, born September 4, 1879, in Wolf Creek Twp. and reared to manhood in this locality. Practically all of his life was spent here. Riley Davis received his education in the Ashley and Diamond schools, always counting on George Ashley as his most highly esteemed teacher. In 1907 he was married to Miss Gertrude Renneker. To them was born one daughter, Bernice Lorraine. Shortly after his marriage he moved to Stratton, Colorado, where he had taken a homestead. There he lived for fourteen months and then returned to Anthon. Some time after that he purchased the farm three miles northwest of Anthon where the family still lives. In February 1933 Mr. Davis' health began to fail and although the best specialists were consulted and everything that loving hands can do was done, he steadily grew weaker until last week he became bedfast. The end came a minute before midnight Sunday, death being caused by hardening of the arteries. Throughout his suffering he was extremely patient and appreciative of the kindness and thoughtfulness of neighbors and friends. In early childhood Mr. David became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and daughters, six brothers and sisters, Nettie Morfitt of St. Cloud, Minnesota, a twin sister who visited him a few weeks ago; LeRoy Davis of McAllen, Texas; Milo Davis of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Alta Bradshaw of Springdale, Arkansas, who also visited her brother a short time ago. Funeral services which were very largely attended were conducted in the Anthon M.E. Church at 2 p.m. today with Rev. Watson Herrold officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery under direction of Hudgel Funeral Service. Obit in The Anthon Herald, 7 February 1934, page 1, Left by JMeister on 3 Jun 2010
