Harvey Ellis Helmick, 87, of Idaho Falls, passed away June 5, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Richwood, W.Va., to Grover Cleveland Helmick and Susanna Stowers. Harvey graduated from Weston High School in West Virginia and then moved to Maryland to work in a war plant until he went to serve his country during World War II, where he was a private in the U.S. Army. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

On Nov. 28, 1942, he married Betty D. Huff in Ellicott City, Md. During his life, he worked for Glen L. Martin and Ford dealerships in Maryland. Harvey was a member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church, and enjoyed golfing, woodwork and gardening. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Betty D. Huff Helmick; daughter, Donna Lee (Michael) Bargelski; granddaughter, Chanin Thompson; grandsons, Chris Bargelski, and Jeff D. Thompson, all of Idaho Falls; his sisters, Rhoda Bell (Tom) Tawney of Maryland; Zaynell John of Weston, W.Va.; Maydell (Bill) Peterson of Pennsylvania; and his brother, Eldon (Joan) Helmick of Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Buck Miller Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls, with Pastor Matthew Swenson of Gethsemane Baptist Church, officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Taylor Cemetery following the service with the Bonneville County Veterans Team performing military rites.
