He attended Woodstock public schools and, briefly, the local military academy, Mercersberg Academy, in Woodstock. He was 16 when his father died after being kicked in the stomach by a mule.
Henry came to Philadelphia about 1897 and got a job with the Swift China Co. He joined the youth group at the Baptist Temple Church where he met his future wife, Viola Maud Bockius. Baptist Temple was a large church with a very active youth group at the turn of the century. He joined the Church's oratory club, and was quite proud of the speeches he gave, as his learning was largely self-taught.
On February 10, 1904 he married Viola Maud Bockius in the Baptist Temple Church, with the Rev. Russell Conwell officiating.
Inspired by the great FL land boom, Henry moved his wife and four daughters to Ft. Meyers, FL in 1919. He drove his family to Florida in a model T Ford, and there are family pictures of the family stopping along the dusty dirt roads. Henry bought 4 acres of land along the boulevard in Ft. Myers (near Thomas Edison's home), with the goal of becoming a sucessful vegetable farmer and shipping his produce to the North. Unfortunately, this business venture was not successful, and he moved his family back to Philadelphia in 1921.
Upon returning to Philadelphia he operated a butter and egg wholesale business at 4th and Masterson Sts, Phila PA.
He cared for his paraylzed, bedridden wife for 10 years before her death in 1960.
Residence at the time of his death: 924 Tabor Road, Olney, Phila. PA.
