Devolco C. Potter.
Devolco C. Potter, Sr., aged 79 years, the last of the old Independence Volunteer Fire Co., and one of the most widely known men in Allegheny county, died yesterday in his home, No. 5314 Natrona alley, after a short illness. Since the death of Matthew Tibbey a few years ago he was the only surviving member of that once famous fire brigade. He was familiarly known as Bob, which name he acquired at the age of 7 years, when he attended school in the Penn avenue district, the name being given him by his teacher, because she could not remember his Christian name.
Mr. Potter was the son of Mary and Tilly Potter. He was born in Second avenue, near Grant street. He received his early education in the public schools in the First and Fifth Wards. At the age of 17 he became a member of the Independence Volunteer Fire Co., which was at that time quartered in Penn avenue, near Twenty-first street. At his first fire Mr. Potter won distinction and was made an axman, one of the chief positions on the company. When there was a boating stage in the rivers, he put in his time as a riverman, and at other seasons worked in many of the mills in the Penn avenue district. It was while he was a boatman on the old steamer Cornplanter, which made daily trips up the Allegheny River, that he became acquainted with Mary Cooper of Kittanning, whom he married when he was 22. His death came as a surprise to many of his friends. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Potter is survived by the following children: Alonzo of Millvale; Miss Annie, at home; Devolco, Jr., of Millvale; William, at home, and John, of this city.
