While bathing with several friends at Mt. Zion mill pond Saturday evening, Charley [D.] FULTZ was either seized with cramps or got tangled in the moss and drowned.
He was right in the midst of his friends and they could have easily helped him out had they known of his distress, but they thought his call for help was a joke until he failed to come up and he was taken out dead, about thirty minutes later.
The body was found by use of poles in about eight feet of water, and when taken out quite a large quantity of moss was tangled about the feet as though he might have strangled while trying to free himself from the moss.
Dr. HILL of Athens hurried to the scene and heroic efforts to resuscitate life were tried for more than an hour but without avail. The body was carried into the mill, near by and men took turns working the arms to try to restore respiration, while women heated grain in sacks and covered the body with them, but there was no sign of a return to life, except occasional apparent breathing and this was found to be purely artificial.
The remains were then turned over to undertaker Val ZIMMERMAN, who removed them to the home of the deceased, about a mile distant.
The funeral occurred at the U.B. church, this city, this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. WELLS officiating, and there was an immense throng of sorrowing neighbors and friends present.
Charles [D.] FULTZ was a son of Mr. & Mrs. Dan FULTZ, of Athens, and a brother of Marion FULTZ, the restaurant man, of Rochester. He was not yet 22 years old and leaves a young wife [Emma E. CONRAD FULTZ] and a small child. He was a vigorous, popular young man, a farmer by occupation, and his death was a great shock to a large circle of friends.
