Visitation will be at Greenview Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 21. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Salem Church of Christ, with interment following in Greenview Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene McClure Parker; brother, Oscar Parker; four children and spouses, Pam Bragwell and Jim, Nelda Thomason and Jim, Steve Parker and Regina, Preston Parker and Tina; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who adore him; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Grace Parker; brother, Arthur Parker; sister, Edith Richardson; and grandson, Jacob Thomason.
He became a Christian at an early age and spent his life living his beliefs, setting an example for his descendants. He served in the Army during World War II, from 1940-45, stationed in Alaska and Europe with the Medical Detachment 151st Engineer Combat Battalion.
He earned a B.S. degree from Florence State College, master's degree from George Peabody and later did post-graduate work at Auburn University. He was principal of Wilson School, Highland Park Elementary School and Muscle Shoals middle/high schools. He served as assistant superintendent and other capacities for the Muscle Shoals Board of Education. After retiring from education, he worked for The Psychological Corp. He retired to pursue a lifelong desire to learn, traveling extensively across the U.S. and into Canada and mastering new skills.
He loved God, life, nature and his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Church of Christ or Cerebral Palsy.
