Olive was the daughter of Justis Laughlin and Cordelia Davis. She married Othor C. Bates on December 20, 1914 in Guernsey Co., OH. She was the mother of Frank J. and Robert L. Bates.

Olive Chloe Bates, 57, died Wednesday evening at her home in Derwent following a lingering illness.
A daughter of Justice and Cordelia Davis Laughlin, she was born and reared in the Derwent community, where she spent her entire life. She was a member of the Buffalo Harmony Lutheran church. Her husband, Orthor Bates, died in 1948.
Surviving are two sons, Frank of Canton, Robert Lee, student at Wittenberg college, Springfield; her mother, Mrs. Cordelia Laughlin, Derwent; one brother, Arthur Laughlin and one sister, Mrs. Harvey Secrest, both of Derwent.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Buffalo Lutheran church with Rev. Myron Danford officiating. Interment was made in the Buffalo cemetery.
