Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Winston (known to her intimate friends as "Bettie") aged eighty-four passed to her reward on February 1, 1923, having succumbed to an attack of pneumonia. At the time of her death she was living with her youngest son, George, near Yellow Branch, Campbell County, Virginia. She suffered much but was surrounded by all the loving care it was possible for her children and grandchildren to bestow.

She was the eldest daughter of Henry Alexander and Sallie Moorman. Her education was gotten from private teachers at Buckingham Institute. At the age of twelve she became a member of White's Methodist Church, and to the end of her long, well spent life she was a faithful and consistent Christian.

She was married December 24, 1867 to Charles J. Winston. Seven children, blessed their union.

After her marriage, she went to live near Lamb's church where she taught a Sunday school class for many years. Even after her eightieth birthday, she went regularly to her class. She was an earnest Bible student, and her knowledge of sacred history and spiritual things was wide and deep.

As a neighbor she was kind, thoughtful and hospitable; as a friend loyal; as a wife and mother most faithful and devoted.

Her life was a beautiful example of sacrifice and service.

Four children survive her, Messrs. H. C., Edward and George Winston and Mrs. R. Lee Moorman of Charlotte Court House.

On February 2d she was laid beside her husband in his family burying ground at Hill’s Creek, Virginia.

Written in loving memory by her niece, Lucy Elizabeth Winston Clay, who knew her well and loved her. College Park, Maryland, February 10, 1923.
