Corp. Bruce Merritt was born in Newton Kansas, December 17, 1917, he lived in Newton and attended the city schools, after completing school he worked at various places of business in Newton.

After the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the service of his country in the year 1943, Joining the Marine Corps. He took his boot training at San Diego, California and later his basic training at Camp Pendleton, California.

After his basic training he left for overseas duty where he served as a scout for his platoon, at which time he received his promotion to Corporal.

Corporal Merritt fell in action duringa critical stage of the battle for Saipan Island in the Marianas, June 22, 1944.
