LTC Wendell R. Becton, Sr:
Age 94. A native of Mobile County, AL and resident of Hall County, GA since 1974 after retiring, died at his residence on Friday, March 10, 2000 following an extended illness. Colonel Becton held a BS Degree in Forestry from the University of Georgia and an MF in Forestry from Yale University. He had been a Forester in Private Industry, State Government, U.S. Forest Service as a Forest Ranger and upon his retirement was a Chief Forester, U.S. Forces Command, Fort McPherson, GA. Upon approval by Congress, he implemented and directed the Woodland Management Program for the Third U.S. Army, first at Army Posts in the Southeastern United States and later the program was expanded to other military installations in the United State. This meant proceeds from Sales of Lumber and Forest By products saved Tax Payers $1.4 million annually and maintained areas in suitable conditions for Troop Training purposes. It was a very successful program and the first of its kind. Colonel Becton served in the U.S. Army during WW II, first stationed in England and later EPO. He participated in three (3) major battles. After cessation of hostilities, he served in the US Army of Occupation in Germany as a Military Government Officer in Frankfurt. He received many achievement Awards, both in the Civilian and Military Sectors. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Berean Sunday School Class in Gainesville. In addition, he was a member of a number of profession, Fraternal and Military organizations. He was also a member of the Civitan Club. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Simpson Becton, Gainesville; daughters, Alyne Bruce, Reidsville, NC, Dorothy Alspaugh, Pfafftown, NC; son, Lt. USAF Ret. Wendell R. Becton, Jr., Corpus Christi, TX; stepdaughters, Sue Reid, Townsville, SC, Martha Rapp, Snellville, GA; stepsons, Brian Scoggins, Newnan, GA and Richard Scoggins, McDonough, CA; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and three step grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church on Monday, March 13, 2000 at 2 p. m. with Rev. Bruce Fields and Dr. Bill Coats officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, March 12, 2000 from 7 to 9 p.m. Entombment in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Ministry of Caring or Sanctuary Renovations Fund, 751 Green Street, SW, Gainesville, GA 30501. Funeral arrangements are by MEMORIAL PARK FUNERAL HOME of Gainesville, GA.
