On January 20th, 1919 in Bluebell, Utah, he became the 11th of the 12 children born to William Porter and Mary Sophia Elizabeth Lybbert Merrell. He was a graduate of West High and of BYU's MBA program.
He married Eunice Laurel Hutchings of Lehi in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Nov. 25, 1942. Lt. Col. Merrell served with distinction and honor in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He concluded his 30 years of military service while commanding Ft. Douglas. After a brief rest selling insurance and real estate, he became the PR man and was on the board of directors of ICPA, IPA, IPP, and the project manager of Deseret G & T. His LDS church callings were numerous, but he most loved the 19 years he served in the Provo and Mt. Timpanogos temples.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, parents, and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his three daughters, Laurel Lee Merrell, Cynthia Kay Rose (Keith), and Rebecca Sue Djurich (Milan), all of Lehi, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his brother LaVoir Merrell (Provo), and his sister Winona Wonnacott (Bill) of St. George. Thanks and appreciation to Dr. Mower, the American Fork Hospital professionals, the caring people of Applegate Hospice, and all friends and relatives who assisted in his care and visited him.
Funeral, Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 at 12:00 noon in the Lehi Utah LDS Stake Center, 200 N. Center St. Friends and family may call at the Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main, Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the church Monday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery with military honors by the VFW.
