Bernita E. Speltz, 82, formerly of Rollingstone, died June 25, 2002, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

Bernita was born July 3, 1919, in Manchester, Iowa, to Ferdinand and Eva (Schneider) Walter. She married Thomas A. Speltz Nov. 25, 1947, in Winona; he died Nov. 25, 1992.

Bernita worked with her husband and brother-in-law at the Speltz Chicken Hatchery in Rollingstone. She was also a secretary for the Diocese of Winona for many years, retiring in 1989. Bernita was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Rollingstone and the St. Nicholas- St. Theresa Society.

She was an avid volunteer helping school children in Rollingstone and aiding residents at St. Anne of Winona. Bernita recently was honored for her volunteer efforts during volunteer week at St. Anne. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Patrick of St. Paul, Minn.; two daughters, Jolene (Robert) Overbeck of Venice, Calif., and Linda (Joseph) Lowther of Winona; grandchildren, Zoe and Joseph Overbeck, Michael and Jacob Lowther and Christopher Speltz; great-grandchildren, Jenna and Blaine Lowther; one brother, Carlus (Mardelle) Walter of Winona; and one sister, Theresa Walter of Winona.

Bernita was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom; brother, Severin; and sister, Marcella.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Rollingstone, with the Rev. Michael Cronin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where there will be a Christian prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call from 10 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the church.

Hoff Funeral Homes-Burke Winona Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
