Claudius Barclay Barbee was born in Barclaysville, Harnett County, NC, the 2nd of 3 known surviving children (1 girl/2 boys) born to merchant & farmer, Christopher C. Barbee, and his wife, Kezia Barclay.

He was the paternal grandson of Christopher Barbee & Frances Jones of Wake County. Claude was descended from a long line of Barbee's in North Carolina, traced back to Christopher Barbee (1713-1777) who first came to Wake County from Essex County, VA, and owned all that property in what is now Chapel Hill, and he was was grandson of this family's patriarch, William Barbee who died 1720 in Middlesex County, VA. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of John & Milly Barclay of Harnett County, who established Barclay's Inn ca. 1820, a stop on the Old Stage Road that ran from Raleigh to Fayettesville.

Claude was raised in Harnett County and learned the merchant trade from an early age, as his father was a stage coach contractor and ran the business started by his wife's parents, which was the southern stop of the same business his family serviced in Raleigh.

Claude's older sister, Mildred "Millie" Barbee, married CSA veteran George Dallas Rand of Wake County in 1866, who had established himself in Raleigh as a prominent merchant. By 1874, Claude and his parents had removed to Raleigh, and by 1880, the 24-year old was in was living with his married sister, and had formed the wholesale grocery business of "Rand & Barbee" with his brother-in-law, "Dal" Rand. This business grew to become one of the most successful post-war businesses in the capital city, later branching out as far as Richmond, VA, where Claude was known to have been running one of their store in 1890. Claude would later enter the wholesale grocery business as "Barbee & Barbee" with his brother Edgar, who later became a real estate developer who built the town of Zebulon, NC in 1906.

In about 1887, the 31-year old merchant married 27-year old Nancy "Nannie" Wayland of Virginia. The couple would become parents to 3 known children: Kate Wayland Barbee (1888-1979), Claude B. Barbee Jr. (1892-1939), and Henry "Harry" Barbee (1898-after 1942).

In 1906, Claude was widowed when his wife of 19 years passed at age 46. By 1910, Claude had married for the second time to Stella Kilpatrick, a 25 year old from Kinston, Lenoir County. Stella was a gradate nurse who would go on to become a member of the nursing staff at Rex Memorial Hospital for more than 40 years. There were no children born to this union.

Claude Barclay Barbee died May 26, 1942 in Raleigh at his home at 612 North Blount Street. He was 86 years old. According to his obituary, he was a Methodist and a member of William G. Hill Masons Lodge No. 218, A.F. and A.M. The obit stated Mr. Barbee was active in civic affairs for many years and was formerly a member of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce. His second wife, Stella, survived him 27 years and died in 1969 at age 88. She is buried near Claude and his first wife in Oakwood Cemetery.

As for his children, Katie married wealthy cotton mill owner, Mabrey Hart of Tarboro, Edgecombe County in 1910 in a wedding ceremony that was touted as one of the social events of the year. They had 3 children. She died in 1979 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Tarboro. Claude Barbee Jr. married, had children, and died in Raleigh in 1938 at age 46. His youngest son, Harry, removed to Westfield, New Jersey where he married and had children, and where his descendants still live. Claude's grandson, Harry Barbee Jr, who died in in Rumson, New Jersey in 2006, was for many years Executive Vice President of J.P. Morgan Bank of NY.
