NORFOLK - Beatrice "Betty" Hugo of Norview. The sky will be much brighter as Mother's star entered the heavens to take her rightful place with her God on March 13, 2006, as He called her home at the age of 94. Betty was born in Buffalo, N.Y., Feb. 12, 1912. Mother came to Norfolk as a child where she grew up, married, lived and raised her family. Mother was a Norview resident and lived a full, wonderful life, dearly loved by her family and many friends. Mother was the oldest living member of the Norview United Methodist Church in Norfolk, where she was a member of the Esther Nicholson Sunday school class. A 1929 graduate of Norview high school, she retired from Frank Ford Jewelers.
Mother was predeceased by her loving husband, Francis William Hugo; her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Douglas Savage; her sister, Dorothy Gaskins; and her daughter, Jeanne Francis. Mother is survived by her daughter, Betty Jo and her husband John McMullen of Virginia Beach; and her son, Douglas William and his wife Grace Hugo of Fredericksburg; her sister, Joan DeAngelis of Rockport, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and many dear, good friends.
Mother's gentle soul will be missed by all she touched. We thank God for lending Mother to us. She enriched all of our lives. Mother was a giving person who always provided love and understanding to her family and seldom asked for anything for herself.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to her beloved church, Norview United Methodist Church, 1112 Norview Ave., Norfolk, Va. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. W. Joseph Shepard with interment following in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk.
