Clarida Clark Tarrant Carpenter, 97, went to be with the Lord at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at Eldercare, where she received wonderful care from the staff.

She was born Feb. 23, 1910, in Alton to William Charles and Lucy Idell (Gentry) Clark and was a stepdaughter of the late Rev. Sidney A. Rayburn.

She married Rueben C. Carpenter on March 29, 1948, in Chicago. He preceded her in death.

She was a charter member of Abundant Life Community Church in Alton. Throughout her life, she raised thousands of foster children.

She is survived by two daughters, Alta Haas of Midway, Ark., and Doris Cottingham of Brighton; three sons, Robert Carpenter and his companion, Susan Dickerson, of Granite City, Ronald and Sue Carpenter of St. Louis and Paul Carpenter of Texas; Tam Frost of Brighton, who was like a daughter; four grandchildren, Karen Clark, Brian Carpenter, Laura Johnson and Brandi Marlen; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Juanita Clark of Alton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her husband and stepfather, she was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Terry D. Seago; a great-grandson and four brothers, Elmo, Chester, Buford and Leno Clark.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until services at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. The Revs. Sam and Justin Henning will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the family or Abundant Life Community Church.
