Charles was born to Abner Matthews of North Carolina and Elender Fox of Tennessee. In 1849 he joined the gold rush to Placer County, California. He relocated to Santa Rosa California about 1852, and there he wed Mary Ann McMinn of Illinois, July 10, 1853. He was noted to be an active member of the Masonic Lodge and his church, pursued several vocations, and in the 1860's bought property and took up farming in nearby Alexander Valley. He was noted for his generousity and compassion, and although suffering a lengthy decline, lived to 87 years of age and became the last living charter member of the Santa Rosa Masonic Lodge. Charles and Mary had numerous children who married into many of the pioneer families of the Russian River area.
