John M. Desloge Sr., LTC USAF Retired, age 94, died March 12, 2009, at his home.

John was born in St. Louis, Mo., to the late George Thatcher and Madeleine Stith Desloge.

After graduating from St. Louis University and City College of Law in 1941, he joined the United States Air Force, serving with distinction until 1966 retiring as Lieutenant Colonel.

He also served in Panama Canal Zone, England, Germany, and Falls Church, Va.

After retiring from the Air Force he worked at the Pentagon.

In 1979 he and his wife retired to Gloucester County in southern Virginia on the York River in Bena.

John was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church.

He loved playing tennis and watching college basketball, but most especially he loved his family.

They were of the utmost importance to him.

John was always willing to help those less fortunate and did so many times never hesitating to put the needs of others first.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who leaves behind a legacy of accomplishments and achievements earned with an unparalleled combination of dignity, drive, and respect for all of those around him.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Wilfley Johnson Desloge; eight children, John M. Desloge Jr., Robert W. Desloge, George T. Desloge, Peter E. Desloge, Denis S. Desloge, Mary Anne D. Brundage, Dorothy D. Tipton, Francis T. Desloge; sister, Sister Madeleine S. Desloge; brother, Taylor S. Desloge; 23 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by the Rev. James Cowles will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Catholic Church, Gloucester.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

Inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at Arlington National Cemetery.
