He was a building contractor for over 35 years. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran, having served during World War II and a member of the Va. May Masonic Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years and the Va. May Eastern Star. Survivors include: his wife of 56 years, Edith Akers Sutphin of Radford; a brother, R.A. Sutphin of Blacksburg; five sisters, Virginia Franklin of Dublin, Geneva Sutphin and Phyllis Duncan, both of Radford, Christine Sutherland of Roanoke, and Snowa Lockhart of Salem. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Kristie Banes and Rev. Jim Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, where members of Va. May Masonic Lodge #38 A.F. and A.M. will conduct a graveside rites and are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to your favorite charity. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
