Who was dad?
Dad was much more and did more in his life than people would imagine. If someone wrote his biography, readers would think it was fantasy. More than anything, dad was a passionate catholic, a romantic husband, father of four, grandfather of seven, brother, son, soldier and a friend to many. You could trust your life to him. He was also an angel with a mischievous streak. He was a man, yet a child when it came to new things and technology. He loved people, loved to talk, admired people's successes and was always gentleman.
He and his precious and extremely beautiful bride, Della, loved to dance and danced so well that I've seen people clear the floor just to watch them dance and applaud afterward. He said there were 2 kinds of whiskey: love'n whiskey and fight'n whiskey. He could tell a story that would enthrall audiences bringing them into and through fantasies and realities of history. He could play music and any instrument that he chose to learn and he mastered many. The music came from his heart. He was also an artist and writer, though most of his letters were war time letters of passion to his bride.
He was born and reared in Metairie, LA to one of the first families of that region and had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, all beautiful people. At the age of 17 he served in WWII, got out, quickly became a young executive at the American Can Company, reentered the military after a bad marriage with a woman that ran away with a pastor. He then served in the Korean War, and Vietnam War. He met his new bride and the true love of his life at Barksdale AFB. She was a volunteer teaching Square Dancing and was/is an extremely intelligent person with a tender heart and powerful spirit. Hidden and intertwined in all this was his experience as a martial artist, a world class pistol shooter and team captain for the Air Force, his courier service for the military including a couple of near death experiences, expertise in photography, photogrammetry, cartography, mathematics, and his advanced surveying. After military retirement, he went on to engineer roadways and bridges for Louisiana. Many of those people he worked with had no clue about who he was or his colorful background.
Most of dad's friends and acquaintances have long since passed on and experiences paid a toll on his strong body. Yet, he was talking with his precious bride, his angel, moments before he passed away. Mom was concerned that dad had quit talking, walked into the room where dad sat in his chair and saw dad sitting their more peacefully than normal, with a smile across his handsome face. What was he thinking as he died. Oh God, how we miss him so much and how I ache to see my mother's pain. My dad loved you God, so please watch over him and his precious bride, our mother.
