LINCOLNTON - Pastor Christopher Douglas "Fred" Murphy, 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 25, 2009, at Robin Johnson House in Dallas.

He was born July 23, 1927, in Buncombe County, N.C., son of the late Claude Vincent and Dorcas Moore Ingle Murphy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving first wife of 43 years Anne Janet McKelvie Murphy; brothers, Thomas F., who died in combat in Italy during WW II, Hughes Albert and Jack Murphy; and infant grandson, Landon Matthew Murphy.Pastor Murphy is survived by wife, Louise; children, Ruth Anne Murphy of Lincolnton, Mary M. and husband John Webster of Roanoke, Va., Christopher David Murphy and wife Ginger of Charlotte, Martha M. and husband Eddie Reavis of Plymouth, MN and Rebekah M. and husband John Curtis of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Christina, Jacob and Robby Curtis and Ian Webster; brothers, John P. and wife Nina of Mount Holly, the Rev. Dewey D. and wife Nellie of Charlotte, Carl L. and wife Brenda of Lincolnton; sister, Ruth M. and husband Richard G. Benoy of Dallas.

Pastor Murphy grew up in Gaston County, graduated from Belmont High School in 1944, and served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. He graduated from Belmont Abbey Jr. College, Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. In the late 1940s Pastor Murphy and brothers, Dewey and John played Blue-grass music professionally as "The Blue River Boys," with daily broadcasts on radio station WPAQ in Mount Airy.

In 1953, Pastor Murphy married Anne Janet McKelvie of Kings Mountain and was ordained to the gospel ministry in the Presbyterian Church US. He served a parish in Virginia, East Belmont Presbyterian Church in Belmont, Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and Grace and New Cut Presbyterian Churches in Lancaster, S.C.

In 1970, he served as evangelist with the Presbyterian Evangelistic Fellowship. Later, he served Hazelwood Presbyterian Church in Haywood County and Westview Presbyterian Church in Mt. Holly. In 1993, he served as assistant pastor for First Presbyterian Church in Stanley.

The family will receive friends in Founders Hall at the church between 1:30 and 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. Funeral services will be held 3p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church Stanley with the Rev. Dan King officiating.

Burial will be at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly.
