Herman Winfield Carson was born on November 26, 1864, in Ohio County, Kentucky. He is the son of George Robinson Carson and Mary Elizabeth Barnett Johnson. He was their only child. After his mother died in 1866, his father remarried, Margaret Ellen Johnson Carson, and they had 5 children which would be his half siblings. He had one brother and four sisters. He died as a child on December 27, 1865, in his hometown, and was buried there.
