Leon E. "Papa Bair" Bair Sr., 74, of 495 W. Main St., Mountville, formerly of Reamstown, died Wednesday afternoon after a long illness at Essa Flory Hospice Center, where he lived for two weeks.

Bair worked in the Kutztown terminal of the former Halls Motor Transit, Mechanicsburg. He retired in 1977 after 26 years. He previously worked at the former Pottstown Paper Box Co., Reading.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II and was a member of Ephrata Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police in Lancaster County, the Lancaster County and Pennsylvania fire police associations, the Smokestown, Stevens and Willow Street fire companies and National Campers and Hikers Association. He also was a life member of Reamstown Fire Company No. 1.

A camping enthusiast, he traveled throughout the 48 states and seven Canadian provinces.

Born in East Earl Township, he was the son of the late Leon W. and Alice Griffiths Bair.

His wife, Elaine J. Bowman Bair, died in 1984. He was the 17-year companion of Shirley A. Witmer Oberholtzer.

Surviving in addition to his companion are a son, Leon E. Jr., married to Carlene J. Kreiser Bair of Denver; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Auman of Sinking Spring and Dorothy Bair of Wenachtie, Wash.; and two brothers, George W. of Ellensburg, Wash., and Harry L., married to Jean Bair of Reading.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Robin and Rick.
