Some time after 1880, James Partin Hagood left home to become a cowboy during the great trail drives from Texas.
He married Martha Elizabeth Askew in Hill Co, TX on August 24, 1894. They may have met while chopping cotton. He and "Lizzie" had eight children: Emma Isabelle (Green), Alvus Andrew, Royal Partin, Jessie Guy, Ruby Ellen (Cable), Millie Eulava (died young), James Clyde, and Zola May (Rimer).
James P. and Martha farmed near Itasca, TX and moved to Oklahoma Territory before 1902, then back to Brownwood, TX within 8 months. They are listed in the 1920 Census in Oklahoma. For several years, James P. and Lizzy lived separately with various children. At the time of his death, they were living together in Norman, Oklahoma. James P. never had a car, but had many adventures and many stories to tell and songs to sing about the Chisholm Trail.
