Obituary of James P. Hughes: published in the Portland Observer, March 22, 1905:
"James P. Hughes died at the home of his son George in Danby, on Friday last, aged 79 years. A complication of diseases conspired to the final result, but dropsy was the immediate cause of death.
Mr. Hughes was a native of Freehold, N.J., but he came to Wayne county, Michigan, when but 15 years old, and he had been a resident of Ionia county 47 years. Of these years he had lived in Danby 36.
He was a veteran of the Civil war, having been a private in the 30th Mich.
Beside the son at whose home he died, he is survived by another son, Wesley, of Six Lakes, who was present at the funeral. Services were conducted from the house last Sunday afternoon by Rev. Hegeman, the new pastor of the Congregational church.
