CIVIL WAR VETERAN
1st Mich Inf. Co. D & 1st Mich Cav. Co M

Rogers, Rufus D. Residence Jackson Co., Mich. Enlisted in company D, First Infantry July 4, 1861, at Jackson, Mich., for 3 years, age 18. Mustered Sept. 16, 1861. Discharged for disability, at Washington, D.C., Oct. 20, 1862.

Note: Last name is misspelled on stone.

Information taken from Michigan volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865.

Regiment History: Originally organized to be in compliance with President Lincoln's requisition upon the State of Michigan for military aid to uphold the Constitution and maintain the Union of the States, Governor Austin Blair issued a proclamation, dated April 16, 1861, for one regiment of Infantry to be mustered into the U. S. service.

The organization of the regiment was completed April 29,1961 and was mustered into the service of the U. S. May 1, 1861, with an enrollment of 798. The president had called for these troops to serve three months. The regiment returned to the state at the expiration of its three month's term of service and was mustered out Aug. 7, 1861.

The regiment was immediately reorganized for three years' service, at Ann Arbor, with 960 officers and men, and started for Virginia Sept. 16.

The regiment took part in the Peninsular Campaign of 1862, under General McClellan, serving in the First Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps. It fought gallantly at Mechanicsville, Gaines's Mills, Peach Orchard, Savage Station, Turkey Bend, White Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill.

After the Peninsular Campaign it was assigned to Fitz John Porter's Corps where it was desperately engaged at Second Bull Run, Aug. 30, 1862, with the other regiments of the brigade and sustained a fearful loss under the murderous fire of the enemy's masked batteries. It was during this time that Rufus was probably wounded.

Rufus's parents were A.B. and M.E. Rogers. The rest of the Rogers children in Fairview are his siblings. Unknown where his parents are buried.

Rufus married Mary Ann Turner born 1846 in Canada on November 3, 1866 in Mason, Ingham, Michigan. They had one known child: Liona born May 2, 1868 in Ingham, Michigan.

Rufus's pension records show a Mary Slaght filing for widows pension in 1880 with a grandchild Alpheus Slaght in 1890. Mary Rogers age 27 married Alphenus Slaght born 1825 in Canada, on May 24, 1873 in Ononadage, Ingham, Michigan. Alphenus died 21 Feb 1907 • Oakville, Saginaw, Michigan. Mary then married Adolphus Shuart(Hired help at Slaght's) on 7 Jul 1908 • Oakley, Saginaw, Michigan, Adolphus died 14 Sep 1909 • Oakley, Saginaw, Michigan,
