Thomas was the son of Jonas Winters and Nancy Poyns. Thomas Winters served in Co.A,15th Michigan Infantry & Co.D,1st Michigan Light Art'y. during the Civil War. He married Nancy Jane Williams on 23 Dec 1849 in La Porte Co, Indiana.

Thomas and Nancy moved to Branch County, MI by 1860, then moved to Barry County and Allegan County, then finally settled in Grand Rapids, Kent Co by early 1890s.
