Hattie Usher Dilley Martin was the daughter of Joseph Andrew Dilley and Iretta Ann Dinkins. Her Paternal grandparents were Rev. Samuel M Dilley and Charlotte Lemenda Hinds Usher Dilley.

She was known as "Cousin Hattie" to most of her family after she married the widower( Johnnie Jefferson Martin) of her cousin Sallie Lemenda Smith Martin.

Lamar Selby, a grandson, told of her in his memoir "Growing Up In Phoenix"

"As was the custom of the day, after Grandpa married Sally Smith, he called Grandma (Hattie Dilley) Cousin Hattie and she called him Cousin Johnny. After the death of his first wife and the second marriage to Grandma they continued the practice. After parenting thirteen children they were still Cousin Hattie and Cousin Johnny"

She bore JJ Martin 13 children and raised the 3 surviving children of his first wife, Sallie Lemenda Smith Martin, her cousin.

"Uncle Hilton married (1st Faye Byron) Aunt Cleo and had five children; Harold, Audrey Mae, Alma Faye, John Paul and Jerry. His twin, Uncle Hollis, died young.

Aunt Julia Inez probably died very young (Mama seldom mentioned her),

Uncle Willie married Aunt Effie (Hall) and had nine children; Effie Mae, William Louis, Hall, Hattie, Harry, Wallace, James Calvin, Ethel and Bobby. Uncle Fred died young.

Uncle Roy married Aunt Jessie (Oldham) and had four children; Maysel, Catherine, Roy Glenn and Laurice Helen.

Uncle Laurin died in a logging accident.

Aunt Mildred, mama's twin, died young.

Mama (Melissa) married Papa (Jim Selby) and had three children; Darrell, Willis L. and Lamar.

Aunt Bessie married Johnny Beakstle Brown and had two children; Bobby Jean and J.B. Jr.

Uncle J.D. married Aunt Mildred (Kinnison) and had two children; Wanda Faye and J.D. Jr.
