She was known as "Cousin Hattie" to most of her family after she married the widower( Johnnie Jefferson Martin) of her cousin Sallie Lemenda Smith Martin.

"As was the custom of the day, after Grandpa married Sally Smith, he called Grandma (Hattie Dilley) Cousin Hattie and she called him Cousin Johnny. After the death of his first wife and the second marriage to Grandma they continued the practice. After parenting thirteen children they were still Cousin Hattie and Cousin Johnny"
She bore JJ Martin 13 children and raised the 3 surviving children of his first wife, Sallie Lemenda Smith Martin, her cousin.
