The family story is that Elihu was born in 1834 believed to be a child of the "TRAIL OF TEARS MARCH" and was found alone by Thomas Heffington. Thomas brought him home and raised him as his son. Elihu married Mary Ann Thompson and they had several children. He also had children with 2 of his wife's sisters Martha and Nancy. Both Martha and Nancy died before their children were very old so Mary Ann and Elihu raised all the children. Elihu's youngest child was Nancy Louiza Thompson who married John Edward Wilmoth.
