Zachary Taylor Hardin was the oldest son of Joel P. Hardin and Lucinda Basham Hardin. According to his marriage application, he was born in Breckenridge Co, KY. As a young child, he lived in Warren Co, KY, but moved back to Breckenridge Co. about 1851. His family moved to Edmonson Co, KY in 1870. There he met and married Rachel Adeline Miller on 29 Jan 1874. His children were John Taylor Hardin, Jocinda Hardin Hays, George Washington Hardin, Martha Washington Hardin Wells, Rebecca E. Hardin Winterbower, Lucy C. Hardin Sapp, Levert Hardin, Elvin Hardin, Elverd Hardin, Prudy Hardin, and Gladstone Hardin. In Sept of 1904, he took his entire family as well as many members of his extended family by wagon train to Crawford Co, KS. He died there in 1923.
