Jules Augustin Caumiant was born on December 15, 1871, in Vermelles, Pas-de-Calais, France. He came to America with his family in 1886, through Liverpool, England, on the Cunard Lines. They settled in the Spring Valley, Illinois, area and worked as coal miners. Jules was a carpenter and builder and eventually went to Lehigh, Indian Territory, when J. J. McAlester contracted with the Choctaw Indians to open up the coal mines in Choctaw Territory. Jules built the opera house and also met his first wife Clementine Dock there. She also came over from France. They had two children, August Caumiant and Flora Sylvia Caumiant. Clementine died in 1903 during childbirth, and he later married Jemina Vandel Vanerwegen, who had two children, Raymond and Emma. Jules was a 32nd degree Mason and very proud of it. He also was a member of the Order of Eagles and the Order of the Redmen. He died of a stroke on December 13, 1945, (Funeral home records disprove the 1946 date on his tombstone), when he was almost 74 years old and is buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Henryetta, Oklahoma.
