He was born in Milam County, Texas, but relocated to Runnels County, Texas with his parents after 1910, where he joined the Navy in 1927. In July, 1929 he was married to Elizabeth Marilla Smith in Lynn, Massachusetts. They had a son and a daughter before Elizabeth died in 1932. He then married Ann Howard, also of Lynn, in 1934, and they had three daughters. The family returned to Texas following WWII, and settled in Sinton, Texas, where he had resided since 1946. He was employed by Superior Oil Company until his retirement in 1970, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
