Smith Terrell Shelton, son of Smith Abraham and Olive Lang Shelton, born in Alabama, migrating to Tyler, Tx. and the Pleasant Retreat Community with his family around 1856/1857. He married Mary Jane Cook, February 27, 1864 and lived in the Pleasant Retreat community until his death. He was a Confederate Soldier during the Civil War, serving in Captain Gray's Company K, campaigning in Smith and Van Zandt Counties. He also served as a guard at the Camp Ford Prison, outside of Tyler. He surrendered and was paroled in August, 1865, in Marshall, Texas.
