Susan Elizabeth Baum was a daughter of John D. and Maria Kern Baum of Reading, Berks Co., Pennsylvania. She grew up in Douglass Township and Leesport in Berks County. On 28 October 1865, she united in marriage with Uriah Gambler, son of William and Margaretha Rebecca Bleckley Kemler (later Gamler or Gambler), also of Leesport.
The young couple lived first at Leesport then in Upper Merion Township in Montgomery County. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of one child, John William, born 30 July 1866 and over a decade later by an adopted daughter, Emma Sarah Boyer.
About 1871, Uriah and Susan converted from their Lutheran faith to United Brethren at a revival meeting in Allentown. It was then that Uriah heard the call to preach receiving his license in 1878 and becoming ordained in 1881. Thus began a journey of many years and churches in Eastern and Central Pennsylvania. Susan was undoubtedly an equal and helpful partner in that mission.
In his eulogy of the Rev. Uriah Gambler at the Annual Conference, the Rev. H. E. Miller noted "The one wish which Brother Gambler with his wife so frequently expressed was that neither might have to tarry here long after the translation of the other; and so it was that Sister Gambler rejoined her life's companion in glory land a few days after his departure." As the Lebanon Daily News observed of her passing, "[She was] an estimable woman, possessed of many noble virtues."
