Sun Herald, April 3, 2009 - Jane G. Thompson, 73, of Charlotte Harbor, Fla., died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla. She was born May 6, 1935, in Lawrence, Mass., to Russell and Mildred (nee McCarthy) Bowlby. Upon her husband's discharge from the U.S. Navy and subsequent retirement from the Salem, N.H., Fire Department in 1985, Jane and Jim moved to Southwest Florida to escape the cold and snow of the Northeast. An avid sports fan all her life, she devotedly followed all the Boston Pro teams, as well as thoroughbred horse racing (Rockingham, N.H., to the Kentucky Derby) but her "specialty" was NASCAR racing and "her man" Tony Stewart. She was known in many Web site communities as "Monte Mama," beating all the boys in points, pretending to be a 30-year-old "dude" and not the 70+-year-old great-grandmother that she really was! Surviving are loving family members, including her daughter, Judith (George) of Big Pine Key, Fla.; son, James III (Carol) of Sarasota, Fla.; brother, Bill (Marilyn) Bowlby of Hebron, N.H.; sisters-in-law, Donna (Bowlby) Wienges of St. Mathews, S.C., and June (Wayne) Kinney of Kingston, N.H.; grandchildren, Jaime (Stacy) Ezernack of Natchitoches, La., Cherie (David) Dodge of San Diego, Calif., and Jared (Rachel) Morin of Newfield, Maine; as well as six (soon-to-be seven) great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James Jr.; parents, Russell and Mildred; a beloved brother, Raymond; sister-in-law, Joan (Fogarty); and in-laws, James Sr. and Dorothy (nee Wright) Thompson. Memorial services for "Grammy & Beepah" will be held at a later date at Sarasota National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society.
