J. Robert Kitchel, 84, 128 Woodland Drive, died at his home Tuesday morning. He was a retired farmer and retired from Dunham-Lehr Inc., Richmond, Ind., in 1979. A native of Boston, Ind., he lived most of his life in Wayne County, Ind., before moving here in 1979. He was a member of the Boston Christian Church; a 50-year member and past master of Masonic Lodge No. 667 in Fountain City, Ind.; first worthy patron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 552 ; and a charter member of White Shrine of Jerusalem Chapter 15. He was well-known in the area for his corn husking, for which he won the Indiana state championship in 1931. Survivors include his wife, Nellie; two daughters, Pollyanna Ammerman, Hagerstown, Ind., and Donna Davis, La Mirada, Calif.; two sons, retired Capt. D.V. Kitchel, Redwood City, Calif., and J.D. Kitchel, Castro Valley, Calif.; two stepsons, Robert Hartman, Richmond, and Marion Hartman, Hillsboro; one stepdaughter, Joyce Melanson, Dayton; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson; three foster-grandsons; two brothers, J. William Kitchel, Eaton, and Oren D. Kitchel, Boston; three sisters, Susanna Rich and Dorothy Backmeyer, Richmond, and Lucille Bockhofer, New Port Ritchie, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. His first wife, Lula Mae, died in 1979. Funeral service for J. Robert Kitchel will be at 1:30 p.m. (Indiana time) Friday at the Doan & Mills Funeral Home, Richmond, with the Rev. CP. Hurry of the Lynn Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in West Point Cemetery in Liberty, Ind. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Whitewater Lodge 159, F&AM, will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday and OES Chapter 552 at 7:20 p.m..
