Theodore Hoffstetter, of this city received a telegram on last Saturday morning at 9 o'clock stating that his brother Gabriel had died Saturday morning from injuries received during Friday night. Mr. Hoffstetter was employed on the I.C.R.R. as fireman and while waiting for the fast mail to pass at "Lensberg", he sat down on the end of the ties to rest, being weary from loss of sleep from overwork, he fell asleep. The passing train struck him in the forehead, killing him instantly. He was taken to his home in East St. Louis, at once. The body was brought to this city on Sunday evening and was buried on Monday at 9 o'clock. Deceased was a fine young man and was the son of Mrs. Hoffstetter of this city and had many friends. Our sympathy is with the sorrow stricken widow, and his many friends. Deceased was born in Perry County, Jan. 5, 1878, making him up to the time of his death, 23 years, 5 months and 10 days old. He leaves to mourn his untimely death a widow, a mother, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The following were the pallbearers; Benj. Smidt, John Dewein, John Griebel, August Markworf, Will Sandler, and Jes. Jacobs. (obit. from Perryville Newspaper 1901)
