Baptist preacher for 40 years, farmer, merchant, and Sacred Harp singer. He attended the singing schools of Thomas J. Denson when he taught Sacred Harp singing in nearby Fayette County AL, and would stay at his farm. He was married to Martha Melinda Hankins and then to Sophronie Swindol. He is credited with writing the tune "Happy Christian" which was published in the 1936 Denson revision of "The Sacred Harp."
