Merlin G. "Barney" Barnhill, Sr., age 76, of Holt, passed away Monday morning, February 7, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Milligan on October 25, 1934, to Edward and Mertice Barnhill and has been a lifelong resident of the area. Barney retired after 20 years of serving his country in the United State Navy. He then went to work for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department before retiring. Barney was a member of New Beginnings Church and he loved to fish and playing golf. Barney was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers W.D. Barnhill and Skeets Barnhill.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Betty Barnhill of Holt, children: Merlin Barnhill, Jr. and wife Sandy of Crestview, Tammy Mock and husband Stacey of Crestview, Angela Donovan and husband Patrick of Baker, Darlene Summerlin and husband Michael of Baker, a sister Amy Jo Berry and husband Hank of Crestview. His grandchildren: Michelle, Bill, Skip, Michael, Ashley, and Trent. Great grandchildren: Tessa, Katlyn, Aaron, Nyla, Bill, and Aiden. As well as many, many friends and former co-workers.
A time of visitation with the family will be on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. The celebration of Barney's life will be on Friday, February 11, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at New Beginnings Church with Reverends Raymond Williams and Dick Driskell officiating.
