Andrew P. Duke Dies At Home In Madison
Andrew P. Duke, 79, well known Oconee county citizen, died at his home in Madison last Thursday morning at 7:20 o'clock following two years of failing health and a serious illness of two weeks.
Funeral services were held from the Baptist church at Madison Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Rev. W. H. Harbin, in association with the Rev. Clayton Garrett, the Rev. A. T. Cline, and the Rev. M. J. Stansell conducted the services. Burial followed in the family plot in the Madison cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers were Horace Barnes, Tom Wright, Robert Duke, Thurmond Shedd, Willie Adams, and Howard Head. Mr. Duke, a lifelong resident of the Madison community where he engaged in farming, was a faithful and devoted member of the Madison Baptist church, where he served as a member of the board of deacons and taught a class in the Sunday school for a number of years.
He was also a member of the board of trustees of the Madison school. He was married to the former Miss Mary Barker who preceded him to the grave 20 months ago. His parents were the late William and Mary Broome Duke, both natives of Madison community.
He is survived by four sons, Clyde J. of Shelby, N. C., Claude of Toccoa, Ga., Roy of Madison, and Willie of Port Arthur, Texas; five daughters, Mrs. Gussie Lee of Madison, Mrs. H. H. Jenkins of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. J. D. Kendricks of Fairplay, Mrs. W. L. Collins of Westminster, and Mrs. Martha Wright of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. H. R. Cobb and Mrs. J. S. Price of Westminster.
