Contrary to the statement in her obituary, my grandmother was not a lifelong resident of Tifton. In fact, she and my grandfather lived in Americus, Georgia for over 30 years. They lived on Felder Street in a home they purchased after renting a house on HWY 280 E., and both were members of Cheek Memorial Baptist Church, located at the corner of Highway 49 and Upper River Road. For many years, she worked as a seamstress, first at Manhattan Shirt Factory, and then later at Kinder Manufacturing.
In 1981, my grandmother worked at Cheek Memorial's Daycare Center, where she tended to my son Jeffrey, her first great-grandchild. Two years after my grandfather's death, she moved to Tifton to be near her siblings again. That is where she met and married William David Marchant, my grandfather's second cousin. They were married for eight years before he died in 1991. He is buried next to his first wife at Zion Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Tifton, Georgia.
Following W.D.'s death, she lived for awhile in Steinhatchee, Florida near her only son, William Edward Marchant before moving back to Tifton once again. Following a severe injury sustained in a fall, she was moved to Florida where she later died.
