Eric H. Nelson of Cadillac died Friday morning, May 22, 2009 at his home. He was 79.

He was born in Hobart (Cadillac) on Dec. 3, 1929 to John and Helga (Anderson) Nelson, and they preceded him in death. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. Eric worked all of his life in excavating and owned and operated Nelson Excavating & Gravel Co. from 1973. He was well-known for his expertise as a crane operator.

On April 10, 1953 in Cadillac, he married the former Mildred J. Keller, and she survives him along with their children, Ben (Kathy) Nelson of Cadillac, Sheryl (Dave) Nicklas of Hersey, and Luann (Kevin) Schaaf of Cadillac; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl (Elsie) Nelson of Cadillac; two sisters, Alice Egelus of Cadillac, and Jennie Symanski of Muskegon; a sister-in-law, Joanne Nelson of Cadillac; brothers-in-law, Edwin Keller, Jack (Pat) Keller, Art (Carole) Lang, all of Cadillac, Robert (Eileen) Lang of Grand Rapids, Harold Lang of North Carolina, and Tom (Roz) Lang of Freeland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Nelson; brother, Norm Nelson; sister, Alma Smith; brothers-in-law, Donald Keller, Everette Smith, and Ernest Symanski; and sisters-in-law, Paula Keller and Juella Keller.
