William was born in New York and traveled to Ohio, where he married Elmina Grinnells on February 13, 1845 in Lorain, OH County and they have one child Almina/Mina (Houghton) Packard. Elmina died in 1848 shortly after the birth of their daughter Almina, so she was raised by her grandparents Stephen and Esther Grinnells in Lorain County, OH. William then married Harriet Packard and had a son Harry. They moved to Michigan. After the death of Harriet (1877), William married Ella Totten (b. May 5, 1857 and d. April 23, 1921.) on May 2, 1878 in Ridgeway, Lenawee, MI. Their children are Howard, Harrison and Bertha. Ella married again to William Newman on December 19, 1912 but is buried with Houghton name. William was in the Civil War, the 23rd infantry, company G and was a member of G.A.R.
