Bryan enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 27 May 1861 at Goldsboro, North Carolina. He was mustered as a Sergeant in Company H, 2nd North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 30 March 1862; 2nd Lieutenant on 08 October 1863; and 1st Lieutenant on 12 October 1864. He was wounded several times: Battle of the Wilderness 12 May 1864, Winchester 19 September 1864, and at Cedar Creek. He was paroled on 19 April 1865 at Newton, North Carolina. NOTE: Rank of Captain shown on his headstone is incorrect.
